Current: Chunkster Reading Challenge 2012

Awful, awful title for a challenge; great, amazing challenge! I’m happy about committing to this one as it will cross over to my NYR/2011 and my To-Read 2012. I have been avoiding some of those ‘chunksters’ just because of their size… now, bring it on! Here’s the excerpt from their website:

Definition of a chunkster:
A chunkster is 450 pages or more of ADULT literature, whether non-fiction or fiction. A chunkster should be a challenge.

If you read books in large print, your books will need to be 525 pages or more. The average large type book is 10-15% larger or more so it’s a fair estimate.

The rules:
  • No audio books. (There are exceptions to this rule.)
  • No e-books allowed. This was discussed in much detail in the 2011 challenge. The short version: a chunkster isn’t a challenge if you’re reading it on an e-reader.(There are exceptions to this rule.)
  • This year for the first time, essay, poetry, and short story collections will be allowed. Collections have to be read in their entirety to count. If you’ve needed a reason to finally pick up your copy of The Collected Works Of ____ now is the time.
  • Books may crossover with other challenges.
  • Anyone may join.(If you don’t have a blog, just leave a comment on this post with your challenge level and your progress throughout the challenge.)
  • You don’t need to list your books ahead of time.
  • Once you’ve picked a level, that’s it. You’re committed to it!\

I’m excited to say, I’ve read over the levels and I am going to commit to do the “Do These Books Make My But Look Big?” challenge: [- this option is for the reader who can't resist bigger and bigger books and wants to commit to SIX Chunksters from the following categories: 2 books which are between 450 - 550 pages in length2 books which are 551 - 750 pages in length2 books which are GREATER than 750 pages in length].

but we’ll see where all those books come in title-wise. Who knows, I may even pull off the Mor-book-ly Obese…Go visit the site to find out more and see their lists on books that fit into the categories!

I’ll add titles of finished books and their page count as I read the. If/when I do a post on the book I’ll link to it.

  • Last Chance Salloon – Marian Keys; 528 pg. Large print.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – Steig Larsson; 590 pg. Med print.
  • Outlander - Diana Gabaldon; over 800 pages, small print
  • The Shaddow of the Wind – Carlos Ruiz Zafon; 487 pg. Small Print.

Good lord! It’s still February and I’m half way done. I’ve logged one of each and I can tell you, I’ll be reading more of the Outlander series quite soon. I do feel a bit guilty though as all three of those are fairly ‘light’ reading (haha) but hey, after last year I deserve a break from the classics no?

  1. So now I have two chunksters between 450-550, and one each of 551-749 and 750-greater. Just need one more of each of those and I’m done “Do these books make my but look big” challenge.
